Since last October I’ve been working on a design for a photo book. Sure that’s a long time to work on one project, but since the client is myself, and I do it in my ‘freetime,’ it’s really not that long. The book is based on a cross-country roadtrip my brother and I took from October 1st – 4th. The basis is I flew out to LAX (he lives in LA) and we drove to my parent’s house in CT in his giant red pickup truck, in four days. It was the trip of a lifetime (though my 2nd time driving across country) and my brother and I grew a bit closer, even after getting on each others’ nerves.

Since I took close to 1600 pictures, and while my brother was driving I did a whole bunch of Twitter updates (87 to be exact), this made for great book material, and I wanted to design something to keep a record of the trip. Business was also slow at the time, so I jumped at the chance for a new personal project.

Having a personal project is a great thing for anyone, designers, developers or even anyone outside the design world. It allows you to focus on what YOU want, instead of the client or customer. You’re able to showcase your work in a new way, and sometimes fine-tune your skills. Freelance Folder has a great article on personal projects here. Basically, it lets you step back, find something you’ve wanted to do for awhile, and jump in and do it.

So ‘epic road trip of oh-nine’ is my baby, something to work on when I have time, something new to think about, something else to use my skills for, and it’s almost done. I still have to go through and edit the images, but otherwise it’s ready for print. I’m going to be using Blurb to print, and will print one copy to check over the book before I buy copies for my family.

Here’s a few shots from the book:

Ok now I want to see your projects, what are you working on where YOUR the client?
