give your site an oil changeSo you’ve had a website for a couple of years, your nephew went on there and updated it when you moved the business, but for the most part it just stays constant. News flash: your website is doing nothing for you! Unless you maintain your site regularly, there’s no point in having one, it’s going to be dead in the water.

Why update it?

Having an updated site, whether it be regularly through a blog, or at least edited once a month or so with new info, is the first step you need to take in getting your website to live up to its full potential. Even if you don’t care about SEO it’s vital to keep your website up-to-date.

Things that need to be updated can be as simple as the copyright in the footer, to your whole new line of products no one on the web knows about! If you DO care about SEO (which you should!) then you oughta know that Google crawls regularly updated sites more frequently than non-updated sites. This means if you manage your site right, you’re going to continue to climb in the rankings. Also, doing SEO is a never-ending process, but that’s a story for another day.

How to update it?

Depending on how your site is set-up, this can be really easy, or really hard. I always have my clients on a CMS system, so making changes to their sites is easy. It wasn’t always like this. My old sites were static sites, meaning all the changes that needed to be done were done on each page by hand. This left a lot of room for errors, especially when I was making the changes late at night!

If you are still in contact with your original web designer, then most likely they’ll have a solution that will work for you. If you’re going through a redesign right now, or are looking to in the future, then make sure that you have a plan in place to edit the site. Again, try to push for a CMS so you’ll be able to do easy changes yourself.

And if all else fails…

Let us know! We can help you set up a game plan for managing your site, or at least figure out how to edit it ;)
