WordPress Graphic Design and Development

Posted on: September 10th, 2011 by Ashley Hill No Comments

While I love (LOVE) creating designs for print media, the demand for print is way down, while the demand for affordable, easy to maintain websites is up. This is why, starting today, Redd-Design will primarily be a WordPress graphic design and development company.

wordpress

We’ve been using only WordPress as a CMS for several years anyway, and have gotten to know the system quite well. Not too much is changing in the way we’re working with customers. We still provide outstanding customer service, but this will allow us to focus our efforts on learning EVERYTHING (or at least try) there is to know about one of the most popular blogging and CMS systems.

We’ve already started making thing switch in our blog posts, as many of them lately have been about WordPress tutorials and hacks, so check out WordPress here, and then let us know what you want your design to be.

New WordPress Tutorial Site

wordpress tutorial

Here’s a site I’ll be definetely referencing anytime I need something wacky for my WordPress templates: WPRoots.

Newly launched, and already with some fun looking tutorials, I would bookmark it and/or subscribe to their RSS feed for the latest in WordPress design and development tutorials.

Client Spotlight: Beverly Cycles

Posted on: April 30th, 2011 by Ashley Hill No Comments

Beverly Cycles is my LBS, or local bike shop. Local if you mean 20 miles away by bike, and shop if you mean awesome-place-to-spend-a-Saturday. I’ve spent many Saturday afternoons hanging out at the shop, either talking bikes or talking business.

Introduction

I first met Bill, the owner, when I walked into the shop (as I was looking for a new shop to go to) and he immediately offered me some grub. I thought that was pretty unconventional, and we didn’t even talk about bikes until ten minutes into the conversation. After chatting with the other folks there, and seeing the passion they all had for the sport, I was hooked.

When I went home to check out their website, however, it was just a bit sad. Their site was a jumble of pages, without a true workflow, without the real ability to interact and with a lot of old content. So, I made it a personal mission to make the site better, and to complete a website redesign. After practically living at the shop for a few months, I ended up redesigning his site and coding it while hanging out during an indoor ride.

Before

Here’s the homepage before the redesign:

Beverly Cycles Old Site

The design was a bit rough, to put it politely. There wasn’t a sense at all about how to navigate between pages, and pages were labeled the same things but were completely different. There was also a lack of info, and the site had not been updated in awhile.

After

Here’s what the site currently looks like:

Beverly Cycles Latest Design

I’m pretty happy with the new design. It gives the guys more opportunities to display the bikes, as well as the culture at the shop. There’s now an events section where the upcoming events are displayed (and old ones automatically archived).

The Results

The end result for the site is that it’s now built in WordPress, which makes it extremely easy for the guys at the shop to use. It also allows me to keep their site up-to-date, and provide us more options in the future. One thing we’re really looking to add is videos and more interactivity. Google Analytics tells us there’s now more traffic to the site than before, and Bill’s noticed the traffic into his store increasing.

Branding Your Business

Branding: What is it?

The term branding was first used by ranchers to display ownership of livestock as they roamed the plains. Now however, it’s used to display ownership by companies as people roam the internet. Branding your business is what elicits a connection between your company and your customers. It’s the idea or image that best reflects your company, and should be a constant across all medias. The Marketing Spot has a pretty good definition of a brand;

“It is the emotional and psychological relationship you have with your customers.”

So what does this mean for your business?

Branding your own business

Branding is clearly a good thing…you’ll get to have a consistent look and message anywhere you interact with potential customers, you’ll establish yourself in your respective field, and one step ahead of those who don’t yet know what it means to be ‘branded.’ Branding your business should be all-inclusive for anything your potential customer sees, and anything your business creates. This includes website, business cards, advertising, and any packaging or item (including software) that you create.

What’s some good branding?

Apple and Google have some great branding. They are relatively consistant, they spend lots of time (and most likely money) making sure their businesses looks good, and when you think of anything in their fields, you think of these companies first. Music player = Apple and ‘just Google it’ are examples.

Google recently unveiled a new logo for Chrome (my browser of choice) and it’s caused a bit of a stir as the company goes from it’s 3D shiny look, to a flatter, more sleek and matte look. Apple of course continues to dominate the world of white silloettes and subtle grey gradients. Both companies continue to redefine their small branding issues, but they’re household names around the world.

How about ‘bad’ branding?

Bad branding…how about Pepsi and Prince (yeah this guy, or this guy or this: prince unpronounceable symbol).

First, a few years ago Pepsi decided to get rid of their extremely well-known bottle branding, and opt for a very minimal branding that made people think, hey, where did Pepsi go? There was a bit of a uproar about this, as many consumers buy products based on the ability to recognize a label, and there was no recognition with the new Pepsi branding. I’d almost wonder if they helped Coca-Cola more than themselves.

Second, Prince, or The Artist Formerly Known as Prince, or this thing: prince unpronounceable symbol. I don’t think anyone knows what was in his head when he decided to change his name so many times. I mean, sure, there was that thing with his label, but a straight-up symbol? This may have helped his notoriety, but it was more of a gimmick, which is not what branding is about.

How do I get a ‘brand’ for my company?

As I’ve discussed, a brand can be many things, and it can effect multiple aspects of your business. You will want to set a gameplan for both brainstorming, designing and rolling out any new company branding, and make sure when you change, it’s across all medias. You’ll want to work with a company or individual that has experience working with company re-branding, and you’ll want to be prepared to be hands-on with the process as it’s your business and you should be involved.

With that said, check out the services we provide.

Your Turn

Are you looking for a new branding strategy for your business? Have ideas or comments to add to what I’ve said about? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Back that thing up!

Father’s Day is coming up soon, and what better present than to design him something he’ll love?

This was my task yesterday. My dad owns a classic Mustang, and when he goes to shows he sees other cars with the custom boards displaying their modifications and such. I thought it would make a great Father’s Day present, and set about designing it.

As with any design project, the first thing you do is research. I needed the text (modifications, etc), images and a couple of vector logos. I remembered he had a mod list from when he first bought it, and I had typed it all up and posted it online a couple years ago. A quick Google search later and I found the text, copied it to InDesign; task #1 done. Next was to find the images for the board.
